Black Rat (Rattus rattus)
- Size: Approximately 12-24 cm in body length, with a tail that can be as long as 28 cm
- Color: Black to dark brown fur with a lighter-colored belly
- Normal Habitat: Often found in roofs, attics, and wall cavities; prefers higher locations and can be found nesting in trees or other elevated areas around the home
Brown Rat (Rattus norvegicus)
- Size: Larger than the Black Rat, with a body length of 20-27 cm and a tail that is slightly shorter than the body
- Color: Brown to gray fur with a lighter-colored belly
- Normal Habitat: Tends to reside in burrows, under buildings or structures, and in sewers; can also be found nesting in garden sheds, garages, or compost heaps around the home
House Mouse (Mus musculus)
- Size: Smallest of the three, with a body length of 7-10 cm and a tail that is roughly the same length as the body
- Color: Light brown to dark gray fur with a lighter-colored belly
- Normal Habitat: Prefers to nest in small, concealed spaces within walls, under floorboards, or in cupboards; can also be found in garages, sheds, and gardens around the home
Swamp Rat (Rattus lutreolus)
- Size: 12-20 cm in body length, with an additional 10-15 cm tail length.
- Color: Dark brown to black color and lighter grey underside.
- Physical features: Swamp Rats have small, rounded ears and a blunt, rounded snout. Their tails are semi-prehensile and covered in small scales and sparse hairs.
